About the City Government

Pelham operates under a Mayor/Council Government with a City Manager by ordinance. The Mayor serves as the policy head of the City, and the City Council serves as the Legislative Body for the community. The Mayor and the five Council members are elected at-large for four years as the City's governing authority. The governing authority adopts ordinances, develops regulations, and analyzes present and future community needs.

The City Council has community-wide policy-level responsibility.  The day-to-day operation of the City is accomplished through an appointed City Manager and Department Heads who supervise administrative, public safety, public works, and recreational activities.

The City Manager is responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the governmental functions in the City. The City Manager receives policy directives from the Mayor and City Council. As the City's administrative head, the City Manager is responsible for appointing and dismissing all employees except the Fire Chief and Police Chief, whom the Mayor appoints with City Council approval. The City Manager presents the annual budget to the Mayor and the Council.

Mission

The Mayor and City Council work as a team with the City of Pelham employees to provide the public with:

  • A safe community in which to live and work
  • Services delivered courteously and professionally
  • Fiscal responsibility with accountability
  • Convenient opportunities for recreation

The elected officials and employees recognize that if they accomplish these goals, the City of Pelham will always be a desirable place in which to live and work.

Meetings

The City Council Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month unless moved to an alternate date by the majority of the council.
